US 90 Temporary Road Closure

The Texas Department of Public Safety in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation Laredo District Del Rio Area Office will temporarily close a portion of US 90 in Del Rio/Val Verde County to east of Val Verde/Kinney County line on May 9, 2008 from 3-3:45 p.m. and again, on May 10, 2008 from 3-4:30 p.m. in support of the 2008 Laughlin Air Force Base Air Show slated for May 10, 2008. Specifically, the: • 45-minute closure of US 90 on May 9, 2008 from 3-3:45 p.m. will accommodate the arrival of the USAF Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron at Laughlin Air Force Base. • One and one-half hour closure of US 90 on May 10, 2008 from 3-4:30 p.m. will accommodate the actual air show and performance by the Thunderbirds. A detour will be in effect: US 90 to FM 2533 and FM 3008 to US 90, and vice versa. The traveling public is advised to slow down, drive with extreme caution, and watch out for the traffic control devices. City Counsel will hold a Regular meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at 6pm in the City Annex on HWY 90.

Student Recital

The piano and voice students of Lynn McNew will be presented in recital, Sunday, May 11, 2008, 3:00 p.m., at Member Services lobby, Fort Clark Springs. The public is invited.

Community Builder Award

The Las Moras Masonic Lodge will be awarding Glenn Fuqua, local rancher and contractor, with the Community Builder Award. Mr. Fuqua is being recognized for contributing his equipment and employees to build a crushed stone road at the Las Moras Masonic Cemetery. He is also being recognized for his generous donation to the Kinney County Fire Rescue. In additional, the Masons will be recognizing Hayley Harris and Bianca Stewart, Brackett High School seniors, with the Lamar Scholarship medal and $500.00 scholarships each. The presentations will be held at the Las Moras Masonic Lodge, upstairs, Thursday, May 15,2008 at 7:00 PM The event will be open to the public

Family Skate Night

Family Skate Night will be held on Thursday, May 15 from 5pm to 8 pm at The Spot Skating Rink in Del Rio, 301 Margaret Lane. Bring families together and help raise money for Jones Elementary/Intermediate Counseling Dept. Cost is $5.00 per skater (includes skates) The Spot offers a clean, fun and safe environment for kids. They also offer a fully snack bar, video games and much more. Questions, contact Mrs. Welch at 563-5391.

Auditions for Missoula Children’s Theatre

An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Monday, June 9, 2008 at the school auditorium from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00 am and plan to stay for the full two hours. Students, entering 1st grade through 12th grade, are encouraged to audition. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be presented on Friday, June 13, at 7:00 pm and Saturday, June 14, at 3:00 pm at the school auditorium. For more information, call Dee Dee Brown at 563-2814.

Benefit for St. Judes Children’s Hospital

St. Judes Children’s Hospital can use the front of any greeting cards you receive throughout the year for craft projects. Only the front of the card depicting any and all occasions is needed. For details, call Vada at 563-9377.

Letters to our Troops

If you would like to send out a postcard or letter to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan please contact Bonnie Frerich at 563-5372. Letter and notes are the most requested since it boosts their morale and reminds them that the are not forgotten.

Ten Star All Star Basketball Camp

Final applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp is by Invitation Only. Boys and Girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include: Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison. Players from 50 States and 10 Foreign Countries attended the 2007 Camp. College Basketball Scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team. Camp Locations Include: Commerce, TX, Prescott, AZ, Thousand Oaks, CA, Babson Park FL, Gainesville, GA, Champaign, IL, Glassboro, NJ, Lebanon, TN, and Blacksburg, VA. There is also a Summer Camp available for Boys and Girls ages 6-18 of all skill levles.
